Charity Organizations And Shelters: Domestic Violence, Abuse, Charities For Women And Children

Published: July 2, 2007

Domestic violence touches the lives of one in four American women, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Children are also abused in 70% of families living in the shadow of domestic violence, contributing to depression, anxiety, violence, academic failure, and substance abuse among our youth. The staggering statistics don't stop there. Growing up in a violent and hostile home causes a man to be twice as likely to become an offender, and increases a woman's chances of finding herself in an abusive relationship.

Victims of domestic abuse who rely on the help of charity organizations come from every race, religion, age, ethnic background, and socio-economic status. Fear and shame keeps 46% of relationship violence from being reported to the police or charity organizations. Fortunately, a number of charity organizations are dedicated to empowering individuals to stand up for themselves and fight the cycle of violence. Education, emergency housing, counseling, financial support, legal help, and medical care are just a few of the services these charity organizations provide to women and children escaping a violent environment.

WomensLaw.org is one of the charity organizations offering legal help to women in crisis. While they cannot give legal advice, they refer individuals to professionals in their area. The website provides easy-to-understand legal information for women, teens, immigrants, and parents suffering from domestic violence.

Charity organizations like WEAVE and Coaching Boys into Men (a division of the Family Violence Prevention Fund) have created educational programs for their target populations. WEAVE provides women with the tools to be self sufficient emotionally and financially, so they can shed their dependency on their abuser. Coaching Boys into Men aims to prevent domestic violence before it begins. They, along with other charity organizations, provide parenting information on how to raise boys to become respectful husbands and fathers.

Women trapped in a violent marriage often feel as though they have no place to go. The impetus to leave their partner is often dependent on local charity organizations having open doors and free shelters. Safe Horizons domestic violence shelters, safe apartments, and host homes are available to women and children for up to ninety days. Charity organizations providing transitional housing often offer other services to their clients, including group counseling, job training, and nutritional workshops.

Citizens who are aware of the charity organizations in their community are an asset to each other in times of need. Domestic Violence Agencies on the Internet provides a list of shelters, emergency hotlines and other charity organizations by state. The first step is admitting there is a problem; the second step is finding help.

Promote awareness and contribute financially to domestic violence prevention charities by wearing a wristband, ribbon pin, t-shirt, or bracelet. Shop for these items at Shanrene.com and a portion of the sale goes to charity organizations breaking the cycle of family violence.

There are so many ways to show support for women and children making a fresh start. Levels of involvement vary from being a hospitable host family to supporting charity organizations with donations or monetary support to volunteering to work at charities or emergency shelters on the weekend. For the statistics to change, we all need to do our part.
