Childrens Charity Organizations: Medical Charities, Cancer And Luekemia

By:

Published: July 2, 2007

The news is filled with stories of generous donors like Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey giving billions of dollars to children's charity organizations. Such generosity to children's charity organizations has improved the lives of countless children. Medical charities are especially important children's charity organizations, in that they help children suffering from terminal diseases such as leukemia and cancer. However, not everyone needs to be a billionaire to donate to children's charity organizations. Even the smallest donation can make an enormous difference in improving the life of a child in need.

Before donating to a children's charity organization, it's important to research the legitimacy of the charity organizations.  Unfortunately, because many people desire to help children's charity organizations, some unscrupulous individuals set up charities for the sole purpose of exploiting the donors. Fortunately, several websites provide excellent resources to warn potential donors against bogus children's charity organizations.

For example,  the Better Business Bureau and the National Charities Information Bureau have an excellent resource at Give.org. This site provides invaluable information on children's charity organizations, such as whether the organization has responded to the agency's request for information, and whether they meet the agency's twenty standards for charity accountability. These standards of accountability include having a board that adequately oversees the charity's operations, having only a certain percentage of contributions going towards telemarketing and fundraising, and providing requested financial information. The site also forbids children's charity organizations from using the report for promotional or advertising purposes, thus avoiding any conflicts of interest.

One charity which has an excellent charity report is the Children's Defense Fund. It meets all twenty standards of charity accountability, and has disclosed its most recent financial information. The Children's Defense Fund has several well known and well received programs including A Healthy Start, A Head Start, and A Safe Start. This makes the Children's Defense Fund one of the most trusted children's charity organizations in the country.

Other children's charity organizations such as the National Children's Cancer Foundation focus on helping children who suffer from leukemia and cancer. This organization also meets all 20 standards for charity accountability, and it also discloses its financial information. Like the best of all children's charity organizations, the National Children's Cancer Foundation spends the vast majority, 94%, of its contributions on programs rather than on fundraising. The foundation's website provides a wealth of information on types of cancer, treatments, avoiding side effects, and outpatient treatments. It also provides helpful resources such as discussion boards and life affirming stories from other patients. The site further provides information on innovative cancer research, and hospital locations. Donors are also given instructions on how they can donate through the website. This allows the donor to obtain all the information they need before they contribute to the charity.

Children's charity organizations are an invaluable resource to aid needy children. Children's charity organizations such as the Children's Defense Fund help children obtain health insurance, adequate shelter, and adequate education. Medical charities such as the National Children's Cancer Foundation help children suffering from cancer and leukemia. These children's charity organizations all meet the rigorous standards set out by the Better Business Bureau and the National Charities Information Bureau. With just a little research, the donor can safely make a donation to one of the many legitimate children's charity organizations, while avoiding those that are merely out for a profit.
